Sheriff’s Deputy Dies in Fatal Traffic Accident

Sacramento – Lawrence Canfield, a 43-year-old deputy of the Sacramento County sheriff, died of injuries sustained in a traffic accident at Rancho Cordova, authorities said.
Canfield was taken to the Mercy San Juan Medical Center. He was taken to the hospital following an accident which occurred before 2 PM of the same day.
Sgt. Tim Curran, the sheriff’s spokesman, said Canfield had been assigned as part of Rancho Cordova Police Department’s motorcycle unit for four years and had been a 13-year veteran.
Canfield was following a speeding motorist when the accident occurred. According to authorities, he was trying to overtake another motorist while in pursuit when he got hit by another vehicle and was thrown off his motorcycle.
The unnamed 79-year old man who hit Canfield had been detained.
Residents of Coloma Road have already complained in the past about the traffic situation in their area and had requested for stronger traffic enforcement.
Canfield left behind his spouse and two children.
